(From Lloyds List)
A YEAR ago, the total deadweight tonnage of vessels under the Belgian flag was 'almost nil'. But since the relaunch of the Belgian register under a new fiscal regime approved by the European Union, the fleet now stands at 85 vessels of almost 5m gt.
'We started reflagging from November 2003 and as far as we know, all the Belgian shipowning companies have returned to the register,' says Marc Nuytemans, managing director of the Royal Belgian Shipowners Association. 'We had at least one company which had gone completely foreign, and brought vessels back.
'All those that have joined the register are genuine Belgian owners, so Belgium is not the Liberia of Europe.
'By the end of the year we will add another 1m gt to the register due to newbuildings and acquisitions by shipowners, including Cobelfret. This means we might top the Netherlands in terms of tonnage.'
By the end of the year, 75% of Belgian-owned vessels will be sailing under the Belgian flag, Capt Nuytemans predicts.
The total deadweight of the fleet on July 30, 2004 stood at 4.87m tons. Of the 85 ships, 48 are merchant navy vessels and the rest are seagoing tugs. 'All but six of the ships are flying the national flag, including the four largest double-hull tankers in the world,' says Capt Nuytemans.
