THE powerful workers' board of Europe's largest bulk operator, Polish Steamship Company or Polska Zegluga Morska, has refused to accept the government's dismissal of PZM's chief executive, Pawel Brzezicki, writes Herbert Fromme in Cologne.
Treasury minister Jacek Socha had dismissed Mr Brzezicki as head of the state-owned company last week, giving the workers' board until Monday to name a successor. Mr Socha threatened to ask a court to name an interim head for the company, should the board not comply.
The board has a strong legal position due to rules made in Poland's transition from socialism to a market economy. It is very difficult for Warsaw to appoint a successor against the will of the body. Meanwhile, PZM has started legal proceedings against the government.
