Byline: Fully-laden transit fees 'could rise 100%', writes Rainbow Nelson in Panama City
THE Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has opened talks with container lines to change the way it charges for boxes stored on deck.
ACP administrator Alberto Aleman met with representatives of the container industry in Panama ten days ago and is set to meet the World Shipping Council and the International Chamber of Shipping to discuss plans that would change the method of measuring containers stacked on deck.
An ACP source said the changes under consideration could result in an increase in transit fees of up to $40 per teu. Local shipping agents have warned the proposed changes would result in a 100% increase in the transit costs for fully laden box vessels using the canal. Under the existing measurement method, the largest panamax boxships pay up to $157,900 to transit the canal.
'The Panama Canal Authority is currently conducting a dialogue with its customers and the shipping'maritime community to consider restructuring its measurement system for the cost of transporting containers through the Panama Canal,' the ACP said in a short statement.
'Carrying hundreds of containers on a vessel's deck is a growing trend in the maritime industry. In many cases, more containers are carried on-deck than in the inner chamber of the ship,' the statement added.
