KEPPEL Shipyard in Singapore says it has seen a boost in bulk carrier repairs this year as owners cannot afford to wait for docking space at already full Chinese yards.
Singapore's shiprepair yards have always been more popular with tanker owners, and recent years have seen more and more bulk carriers, especially those requiring major steel work, heading to Chinese yards.
This trend has however been reversed to some extent this year.
Nelson Yeo, executive director of Keppel Shipyard, said: 'The shipping market is very strong, freight rates are very strong, people cannot afford to wait in China. So we have a better market shiprepair side this year.'
Commenting on the additional bulk carrier work, he said: 'It is not necessarily sustainable, but quite nice to have anyway.'
