NEW YORK-For the first time, formerly conjoined Filipino twins Carl and Clarence Aguirre left the hospital as two separate boys, in the seats of a double stroller pushed by their mother to the cheers of hospital staff.
"Look at my boys, sitting side by side. This is what I have dreamed of for so long," said their mother Arlene. "Just look at them. They are gorgeous."
The 2-year-old boys, who were born joined at the tops of their heads, were successfully separated in a series of four milestone operations over a 10-month period at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) in this city.
The final operation resulting in their separation took place on Aug. 4, and yesterday the healthy, bright and feisty brothers left the CHAM for continuing physical and speech therapy at a facility in Valhalla in upstate New York.
Carl and Clarence traveled in separate ambulances with a police escort to the children's hospital they had been staying at between operations with their mother.
