"WAS there a hip fracture?"
That's usually the first question I ask whenever I hear of elderly relatives or family friends having a fall. If a hip fracture is involved, I get quite worried because these injuries can be quite serious.
I thought of writing about this problem because Mama Raquel, the feisty 87-year-old former public school teacher whom I wrote about the other week, had a bad fall a few days ago and sustained a hip fracture.
I'm going to share some basic medical information on hip fractures, taken mainly from the Merck Manual. In the United States alone, there are some 270,000 hip fractures each year, 90 percent of them occurring in people older than 60. I haven't been able to find figures for the Philippines, but I am certain they run into several thousands each year. And what's so alarming about these hip fractures is that people actually die from complications, which I will explain shortly.
