GASOLINE stations found to be shortchanging their customers, especially in the face of soaring oil prices, will not be tolerated, Malaca[currency]ang said yesterday as it ordered the Department of Energy and local government officials to throw the book at dishonest petroleum retailers.
"Cheating in the midst of a crisis is to be doubly condemned and will be punished accordingly," said Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye in a statement. "Our transport sector and commuters have suffered enough from oil prices."
An inspection conducted by the Quezon City Treasurer's Office yesterday on gasoline stations in the city revealed that 44 of 119 gasoline stations were fleecing their customers through tampered pumps. The tests showed that the pumps were uncalibrated or short by several milliliters of the gas sold per transaction.
The local government code empowers city governments to inspect and correct uncalibrated gasoline pumps.
Bunye said Malaca[currency]ang wanted the inspection of gasoline stations broadened to cover not only Metro Manila but all gasoline stations nationwide.
