POPULATION management advocates yesterday expressed alarm for the Department of Health's apparent lack of concern over the country's population problem.
The Philippine Legislators Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD) said the government would find it more difficult to provide social services if it did not acknowledge that the Philippines needed to rein in its population.
PLCPD executive director Roberto Ador said this policy would ultimately work against the poor who need social and economic services the most.
"There are already tell-tale signs [such as] poor health services, education, etc. The more we dilly-dally in solving the population problem, the more we'll see the worsening of the poverty situation," Ador said in a phone interview.
The population now stands at 84 million with four babies born every minute. Experts say that by the time President Macapagal-Arroyo finishes her term in 2010, there will be 12.6 more Filipinos.
