CHINA, here we come.
Newly appointed Tourism Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano is convinced the future of Philippine tourism lies in attracting the 20 million Chinese who travel abroad.
Last year, only a miniscule 0.2 percent of these Chinese tourists came to the Philippines, he said yesterday during simple turnover rites at the Department of Tourism.
Outgoing Secretary Roberto Pagdanganan was optimistic that under his successor, the DOT would achieve its target of 2.5 million tourist arrivals this year, surpassing last year's 1.9 million arrivals as well as the record-setting 2.22 million arrivals in 1997.
Pagdanganan, who was DOT chief for 190 days, reported that as of end of August, 1.5 million foreign tourists had arrived in the Philippines, with more expected as the Christmas season approaches.
