THE PRESIDENT of the powerful Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines has come to the cash-strapped government's rescue.
Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla has called on the faithful, especially members of the religious community, to embark on a collective sacrifice to help address the country's financial crisis.
During a Mass in Davao City on Monday afternoon, Capalla's straightforward plea was: "It is possible for bishops, priests, nuns, students, and all the faithful to give up their monthly allowance maybe for one month or two and give it to the President?"
Even P1 each from the 75 million Catholics in the country would ease the problem, he said in his homily, and more than this could spell the "much needed miracle" that Filipinos needed.
As CBCP president, Capalla said, he meant to influence the entire Philippine Catholic community in deciding to "set an example of sharing." He warned that a financial crisis could translate to a crisis of the faith.
