(From The Korea Herald)
The number of new students enrolling at universities will be cut drastically by 95,000 - 12,000 at state-run colleges and 83,000 in private schools - by the end of 2009 under a tentative government plan unveiled yesterday.
Currently the number of new students in all universities and colleges totals a 630,000.
Details about college enrollment and employment rates will have to be disclosed and mergers and acquisitions among schools will be allowed.
The government's draft plan to reform universities will strengthen competitiveness, officials said.
The Education Ministry announced the tentative reform measures when Minister Ahn Byung-young attended a meeting with 400 presidents and deans of universities across the nation.
Ministry officials said the government will finalize the plans, possibly in October, after holding public hearings to get feedback.
