In a first attempt to end years of rampant computer piracy here, Serbian authorities brought criminal charges Friday against a software developer for alleged unlicensed use of Microsoft and Adobe System programs.

Police said they had filed charges against Branko Nikitovic, 35, the owner of Belgrade-based Serbian Object Laboratories for "illegally using programs of Microsoft Corporation and Adobe Systems Inc." by customizing and selling the software to unspecified clients.

It was the first such move by the authorities after more than a decade of near-complete software piracy here. The country was…
