CHARLOTTE COUNTY -- Anyone familiar with Joann Winkler knows she's not thinking about herself these days, despite the hole in her roof and her crumpled car.

Her focus is on the students and faculty at Liberty Elementary in Port Charlotte, where she teaches social studies.

But there was no avoiding the attention of the entire school Tuesday when Superintendent David Gayler announced Winkler had been named elementary school teacher of the year by the nation's largest social studies association.

The award comes with a $2,500 check.
