In what some gender equity advocates called a blow to women's sports, NCAA Division I members voted not to allow five more scholarships in women's volleyball, gymnastics and track and field teams that were to begin this fall. They did agree to add two new ones in women's soccer, partly due to the sport's high injury rate requiring more replacement players.
Many smaller schools opposed the additional scholarships, fearing they would lead to more imbalance between themselves and the bigger, wealthier schools that could afford them. More than 85% of the 202 schools in Division I-AA and I-AAA opposed adding the scholarships, in a vote at the NCAA annual convention.
