Nearly a quarter of the US population has some type of cardiovascular condition. No wonder we're bombarded by commercials for cholesterol-lowering drugs and high blood pressure medications. And all I can think of when I see them is: Why turn to a pharmaceutical solution when natural methods are not only available but proven?
Case in point: When I was on a hiking trip in the Grand Canyon, I met a gentleman who had suffered a heart attack. He was easily 30 years my senior, but he kept (and sometime set) the blistering pace as we trekked the canyon's pebbly floor. He was thin and fit; I would have never guessed that he had survived such a physical trauma. When another traveler mentioned the stern warning he received from his doctor--change your ways or expect a heart attack before you're 40--the survivor told him to heed the advice.
