We love the way Whitehall departments prepare for every eventuality - except the possible outbreak of common sense. The Office of Government Commerce (OGC) is trying to get its CASS project off the ground. CASS stands for Core Accounting Systems Specification, and its particular requirements have been the subject of heated discussion among members of Basda, the Business Application Software Developers Association. We say 'heated discussion' but 'stunned incredulity' might be nearer the mark.
As Basda pointed out, the CASS project requires accounting systems to be able to handle values up to GBP9,999,999,999,999.99 - a penny ...
