China and Hong Kong joined hands on the gold medal podium in Athens last night - creating a piece of Olympic history.

Minutes after a gripping table-tennis doubles final in which Ko Lai-chak and Li Ching secured Hong Kong's second ever Olympic medal, mainland pair Chen Qi and Ma Lin, who won 4-2, pulled their compatriots onto the winning platform in an emotional show of sportsmanship.

Last night congratulations poured in for the Hong Kong pair as plans got under way for a welcome home party.
