BRADENTON -- The day after the mayor criticized a city councilwoman for asking city workers to help fortify her house against Hurricane Charley, he acknowledged that city workers came to his aid as well.

But Mayor Wayne Poston says he didn't ask for the help. Hours before Charley hit, firefighters showed up at his riverfront home to turn off a gas valve.

That morning Poston was at the Manatee County Emergency Operations Center, where safety officials warned residents to turn off gas to their stoves.
