Tokyo, 19 August: North Korean refugees need immediate help from the international community, a Japanese nongovernmental organization member said Thursday [19 August], after completing a prison term in China 11 days ago for helping some of the refugees.

Japan, South Korea and the United States should persuade China to "close its eyes and let the North Koreans go" to third countries, said Takayuki Noguchi, who was fined and given an eight-month prison term by a Chinese court in June for helping two North Koreans flee their country via China.
