NORTH PORT -- Hours before dawn, amid the hum of generators in a parking lot off U.S. 41, they bowed their heads in prayer.

"Lord bless this food, so that the people receiving it have one less meal to worry about. Amen."

And so began another day of cooking up and doling out hot meals to thousands without electricity, water and, for some, a place to call home in Charlotte County.

The Red Cross has distributed nearly 400,000 meals and snacks statewide since the deadly storm hit Friday. That number is expected to rise in the coming weeks as more mobile kitchens arrive. There were five in …
