Migori farmers want to be paid more for their sugarcane.
They say the Sh1,800 they get for a tonne of cane is too little compared to the high cost of farm inputs, such as fertiliser.
Led by the Kenya Sugarcane Growers Association assistant secretary, Mr Owuor Kirew, and a delegate, Mr Aneya Kawaka, the farmers said that cane growing took a lot of time, energy and money. The Kenya Sugar Board should, therefore, increase prices to match the high production costs.
"Since the cost of fertilisers and transport is still high, millers should consider increasing the price to Sh3,000 per tonne. This will motivate growers and boost production," Mr Kirew said.
Addressing journalists in Awendo, yesterday, the farmers asked the Government to classify sugar as a tax-free basic food.
