Women now make up 12% of the engineering work force, compared with about 2% in 1975. It's about time.
Universities with large numbers of female engineers attribute it to vigorous outreach and mentoring programs aimed at attracting and keeping their female students. The University of Illinois at Urban-Champaign's director of special programs, Susan Linnemeyer, believes outreach is critical to success. "It dramatically enhances their retention," she said.
Women are at the lead in recruiting others to the field. Illinois has a 79% retention rate for females in the Women in Engineering's mentoring program, compared with a 55% rate for female engineering students overall.
