Dorothy Height earned admission to Barnard College NY in 1929. But when the college dean saw that she was African-American, he told her to leave because they had already reached their quota of "two Negro students a year."

She went home, crushed. "I couldn't eat. I couldn't sleep for days," Height said.

Now, 75 years later, Barnard College has made her an honorary alumna, an honor it seldom gives.
