By giving raises to female and minority professors who systematically earned less, Northern Arizona University violated the civil rights of 40 white male faculty members, a federal judge in Phoenix ruled recently.
The male professors sued the university and its board of regents in 1995 after minority faculty there received one-time pay increases that averaged $3,000 and women received increases averaging $2,400. The white men received no raises.
