The new class of college presidents has more in common with corporate executives than former college leaders, which may not bode well for higher education, reported Jim Collins, a former business professor at Stanford and expert on organizational success.
As schools focus more on the bottom line, their leaders more resemble CEOs. Presidential tenures are shorter, job-hopping is more acceptable and outsiders more often fill presidential vacancies. "The revolving door might be a recipe for mediocrity," warned Collins, addressing the annual conference of the National Association of College and University Business Officers in July.
