Anyone seriously interested in the history of American art from the eighteenth through the early twentieth centuries has probably seen a work from the remarkable collection formed over the past forty years by Jonathan "Jack" Westervelt Warner. (1) The collector has regularly lent to exhibitions throughout the United States (including Pls. XII and XIII in the exhibition now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.). (2) Works from his collection have been reproduced in countless books, articles, and museum catalogues.

Nevertheless, few people are aware of the full extent of the collection other than those who have visited Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and toured the headquarters of Warner's business, Gulf States Paper Corporation, where much of the collection was displayed until recently.
With the opening of the Westervelt Warner Museum of Young America in 2003, the majority of the paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts objects in the collection can be seen in one building. Located near Lake Tuscaloosa, a short distance outside the city, the museum will surely become a destination for all lovers of American art and culture. The museum is installed in a former conference center that has been completely remodeled, and the elegant installations offer a rich aesthetic experience of American art.
