Better performance, more features, and new choices can make ironing less of a chore. Among the trends smoothing the way to a crisp look are:

Better steaming. There's nothing like steam to tame wrinkles, softening up the fabric for the one-two punch of pressure and heat. Two irons in the Ratings, the Black & Decker Digital Advantage D2020, $50, and the Rowenta Perfect DX9800, $140, produced more steam than any in recent tests. Both have a separate steam control that enables you to adjust the amount of steam or turn it off, a plus for damp items or delicate fabrics like silk.
