I really enjoyed your July report "Hotels: Get the Best for Less." I couldn't agree more with your suggestion about negotiating with the reservations clerk. About 15 years ago I was a sales rep in South Carolina and routinely had to call on accounts in Myrtle Beach. Our company had a firm policy of reimbursing no more than $60 per night for a hotel, but hotels in Myrtle Beach at the time were all around $100. I explained my problem to the night manager of a chain who clued me in to a frequent-travelers club they were just starting, which would afford me a rate of $55. I signed up. ...
