MANATEE COUNTY -- Residents were sent back to their homes Friday evening after Hurricane Charley skirted the county, leaving most of it unscathed.
High wind and rain were reported in the Myakka City area Friday afternoon, but there were no reports of major damage or flooding anywhere in the county.
"Obviously, we're elated, but we feel bad for Charlotte County," said Larry Leinhauser, spokesman for the Manatee County Department of Public Safety. "We feel very fortunate that it wasn't us.
"It's a good example of why you shouldn't let down your guard. We were in the crosshairs, and then it hit Charlotte."
About 800 homes in Manatee were without power Friday night, said FPL spokesman Tom Veenstra.
Ron Stevens, an official with Peace River Electricity Cooperative, said he knew of power outages in the eastern part of Manatee County, including Lakewood Ranch, but he could not immediately provide a number.
