Concert of rare music to launch 'sanjo' group.

By Kim Soo-yeon A new association to promote sanjo music will be inaugurated with a sanjo concert at the Korea Cultural House in Seoul on Aug. 23.

"Sanjo" is a form of traditional impromptu instrumental solo performed on the 12-string gayageum (zither) and other traditional music instruments. The musical form is attributed to musician Kim Chang-jo, who lived from 1856 to 1919, and invented the sanjo in the 1890s, playing it on the gayageum. Kim's music was infused with the melodies of "sinawi," traditional Korean shamanistic music, and "pansori," traditional Korean narrative song.
