CHARLOTTE COUNTY -- The threat of Hurricane Charley slamming into Southwest Florida on Friday has created a surge of storm preparations here.
At supermarkets, customers stocked up on bottled water, batteries and flashlights. Nursing homes bought extra food supplies and contemplated evacuations. Boat owners secured their vessels with extra lines. And hardware stores bustled with folks preparing for the worst.
The County Commission will hold a special meeting this morning, where it will decide whether to declare a state of emergency. Evacuation orders for mobile homes and homes on barrier islands could follow.
