The American Pianists Association (APA) awarded the 2004 Cole Porter Fellow title to Adam Birnbaum, age 25, during its sixth Triennial American Jazz Piano Competition in May.
Birnbaum competed with five other jazz pianists at various venues around Indianapolis for this title. As part of the fellowship, he received a $15,000 cash prize and will receive career assistance and professional engagements for the next two years, including appearances at Indy Jazz Fest in 2004 and 2005, representation on a commercial jazz sampler CD produced by WTPIFM and a touring program.
The other finalists: Dan Cray, Steve Einerson, Brian Friedland, Marco Paguia and Hal Weary, each received a $1,500 cash award.
