Q: What makes a good car at Indianapolis?
A: Indianapolis has so much history, you just have to love the place. This is a track where you have to have a good balance between getting good downforce on the car and trimming the car out to have a low drag. It's a real flat track, so you need the downforce to get the car to stick. At the same time, you have such long straightaways you have to get the drag off the car so you can have good speed on the straights. The motor really comes into play at Indy, and handling and the body of the car are important.
Q: What's the biggest challenge for crew chiefs there?
A: Setting the car up at the right time of day. You need to catch the weather to be consistent with what it will be come race time. Another big issue is your draw in qualifying because it starts at about 10 a.m. If you get to go out in the first 10 cars, you'll be better off. The track just keeps heating up. So that is a challenge that is out of our hands.
Q: What is the fuel mileage and tire strategy at Indy?
A: Fuel mileage will come into play more than tire strategy. Indy is a track that you can get away with a two-tire stop. Track position is important because it is such a flat track.
Q: Where is the passing good, and where is it impossible at Indy?
