Vital stats: Benson, the first player taken in the 1996 draft, is 8-9 with a 4.52 ERA in 21 starts; he had a 2.97 ERA in his last 10 starts for the Pirates before being traded to the Mets last week.

Throws" Benson has a four-seam fastball that tops out at 94 mph and a two-seamer that tops out at 91; those are his main out pitches. He also has a cut fastball, a slider, an overhand curve and a changeup. The two-seamer bears in on righthanded batters. His cutter has the tilt of a "nickel" curve; the pitch also has late, sudden movement. His change needs improvement. He delivers his pitches from a three-quarters arm slot.

Tendencies: Benson's arm action and arm speed are consistent on all his pitches, and he hides the ball well when working from the windup. All of that helps create deception. His mechanics are only adequate, however; he'll short-arm the ball at times because his ...
