Intelligence supplied by GCHQ helped lead to the arrest of 13 terror suspects in a series of dramatic swoops, it emerged last night.

Senior police sources claimed the raids in London, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Lancashire were a major breakthrough in the fight against al-Qaeda.

A senior al-Qaeda agent was among 12 men arrested in the anti-terror raids, it was claimed. The operative was planning an attack on Heathrow Airport, according to reports.

A raid in Pakistan last month led to the discovery of computer files which suggested British and American targets had been identified for attacks.
