GENEVA, Aug 2 Asia Pulse - A new draft package of the World Trade Organization (WTO) will provide Taiwan with a sound foundation to promote its service industry, Economic Affairs Vice Minister Chen Ruey-lung said Friday.
Chen made the remarks after the WTO, the world trade regulatory body, put forward a new compromise framework at a meeting in which representatives of all 147 member states took part as part of its last-ditch efforts to restore the Doha round of talks.
Both Yen Ching-chang, Taiwan's permanent representative to the WTO, and Chen took part in the three-day meeting that ended Friday.
Amid an all-out government drive to promote Taiwan's service sector, Chen said that domestic service-oriented businesses are set to receive a big boost, since the newly revised package dedicates a segment in particular to the sector to underscore its importance in global trade.
