It's always nice to hear a few waltzes and galops one has never heard before, and it's equally nice that Marco Polo appears to be doing for Strauss, Sr., what they did for his son; that is, devote a whole series of discs to the bulk of the composer's output.
In the case of Strauss I, we obviously get very early waltzes, compositions dating back mainly to the 1820s on this disc, a time when Strauss the elder and Joseph Lanner were developing the traditional Viennese waltz from the roots laid down by Haydn, Mozart, and Schubert. Some of these early examples are simplistic by later standards, of course, but they are no less appealing.
Among my favorite pieces on the album are "There Is Only One Vienna," op. 22, "The Composer's Best Fantasy," op. 31, and especially "Cheerfulness in the ...
