Jennifer Higdon: Concerto for Orchestra; City Scape Atlanta Symphony Orchestra/Robert Spano (Telarc CD-80620)
Telarc featured a Higdon work, Blue Cathedral, on an impressive disc last year that featured a mix of composers old and new; this new release is an all-Higdon program featuring two substantial works, and it certainly marks Jennifer Higdon as a composer to be reckoned with.
Her Concerto for Orchestra is in five movements, and yes, the orchestra does get a bit of a workout, with various sections being featured at various junctures. One thing I noticed was that the woodwinds are given plenty to do, but then again, so are the brass, and the strings, and the percussion. The end result is an energetic piece that is enjoyable to listen to. Higdon's music seems to have great charm, and it reflects joy in music-making, particularly in this piece, which I am confident the Atlanta musicians really enjoyed playing.
