ATENEO captain Larry Fonacier may be out for the rest of the season, but he became an inspiration for point guard LA Tenorio, whose three-pointer with 4.3 seconds remaining lifted the Eagles past the Adamson Falcons, 58-55, in the 67th UAAP varsity basketball tournament yesterday at the Philsports Arena.
"I was only thinking of Larry when I made the shot. That one was for Larry," said the 5-foot-7 Tenorio, the smallest man on the court who played big in a game where the Eagles trailed for the first three quarters.
"LA is really capable of making plays like that. He has a big heart. Nanggigil kami (we were overeager) at first because we wanted to dedicate the rest of our games to Larry," said coach Sandy Arespacochaga after the Eagles stayed as the only unbeaten squad with a 5-0 slate.
The slam-dunking JC Intal, who scored all of his 13 points in the second half, led the Eagles out of a 20-point hole in the second quarter. His jam midway in the fourth period put Ateneo at the helm for the first time, 49-47.
Tenorio finished with 14 points, while Magnum Membrere scored 13, including two triples in their third-quarter run.
