(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
COTABATO CITY-At least two Muslim congressmen from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) are pushing for the postponement of the September regional elections.
Maguindanao 2nd district Rep. Simeon Datumanong and Lanao del Sur Rep. Faysah Dumarpa want the elections deferred because of various reasons including alleged lack of preparation and budget.
The idea for the postponement of the ARMM elections came a week after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo invited Muslim legislators to Malaca[currency]ang for a meeting about the ongoing negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
Datumanong and Dumarpa were silent about the outcome of the meeting.
Peace advocate Fr. Eliseo Mercado, who played a vital role in the 1996 peace agreement with the Moro National Liberation front (MNLF), said the postponement of the elections could be a window of opportunity for both the government and the MILF.
