(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
STA. ROSA, Laguna-What ought to be a hotly-contested election of the Laguna mayor's league held here yesterday went on without a hitch after members of both the administration and opposition agreed to set aside their political differences in naming their new set of officers.
The victory of Siniloan Mayor Gilmore Acero as the new league president dismissed talk that several Malaca[currency]ang officials wanted to interfere with the affairs of the association of local executives in the province.
The election, held in Barangay Balibago turned into a virtual political lobbying as Mayor Joel Cuento of Sta. Maria town and Fely Vierneza of San Pedro both suggested that the election for their new president should be discarded to smoothly give the chairmanship to Acero.
"When we ran in the last elections, we all wanted to win unopposed to minimize troubles and avoid division among our constituents. What more in this kind of (organization)," Cuento told the 27 mayors present in the meeting.
Following rules
But Los Ba[currency]os Mayor Caesar Perez, one of the election committee members, disagreed and reiterated that they should follow the guidelines set by the constitution of the League of Mayors in the Philippines (LMP).
