Hamburg port busy
THE port of Hamburg handled 3.4m teu in the first half of the year, a 15.9% increase compared with the same period last year, writes Nora Luttmer in Hamburg.
'Container handling will this year surpass the 7m teu mark,' said J'rgen Sorgenfrei, chairman.
In the first half overall handling increased 8.2% to 55.5m tonnes. The only negative trend was in bulk goods, which saw a drop of 6.5% to 18m tonnes.
Mr Sorgenfrei put that down to difficulties in the grain market, very much influenced by EU politics.
He said a main reason for the boom was trade with Asia, especially China. 'For northern Europe, Hamburg is a turntable for goods coming from Asia,' he said.
