Byline: Reported engine size suggests vessels with capacity of nearly 11,000 teu. Exclusive by Hugh O'Mahony and Janet Porter
MAERSK Sealand is lining up a series of containerships that will approach capacity of 11,000 teu.
Parent company A P Moller-Maersk has taken the critical step that will trigger construction of the world's first containerships of that size, Lloyd's List has learnt.
Sources close to Hyundai Heavy Industries suggest that the shipbuilding group's marine engine division has received a first order for a 14-cylinder K98 engine built under licence to MAN B'W from the Danish group's Odense Shipyard.
Maersk Sealand, the first line in the world to operate 6,000 teu ships, has a large order book at Odense that is thought to stretch to 2009, with 12 super post-panamaxes scheduled for delivery over the coming five years. Another seven with nominal capacity of 6,070 teu are on order from Hyundai Heavy Industries.
The 14-cylinder, 980 mm bore version of the new two stroke engine offers 80,080 kW (108,920 bhp) of power, compared with 68,640 kW (93,360 bhp) for the 12-cylinder engines delivered to date.
