ASIAN shippers say they will fight attempts by container lines to impose a security surcharge.
Liner conferences such as the Far Eastern Freight Conference are considering a surcharge on shippers to pay for the cost of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code, although lines themselves cannot agree how it should be levied.
John Lu, chairman of the Federation of Asean Shippers' Council, said it would fight such a charge much as it had opposed other levies such as the Terminal Handling Charge, which it has long contended is not transparent or representative of the real level of terminal charges.
