MADRID, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Spain's Socialist government on Sunday rejected criticism by Australia that it had encouraged militant extremism by withdrawing its forces from Iraq.

Spain would "never accept threats of a terrorist group," said Socialist party spokesman Trinidad Jimenez, who described the Spanish troops' pullout as fulfilling a campaign pledge based on long-standing opposition to the US-led war in Iraq. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Sunday that Islamic militants were "encouraged" by decisions by Spain and the Philippines to withdraw their forces from Iraq.

Downer said the threat by a group calling itself Islamic Tawhid Group, which claims to be an al-Qaeda branch in Europe, was a direct result of Madrid and Manila's ...
