Self Sympathy

Self Sympathy Self-esteem is often touted as the key to mental health. But self-compassion-feeling caring and forgiving toward oneself-may be more central to happiness. Mark R. Leary and other psychologists at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, gave subjects either positive or neutral feedback about their personalities from a supposed observer. People who had scored low on tests of self-compassion reacted negatively to the neutral ratings. High scorers saw them as more positive and felt less anger and anxiety about them-even if they had low self-esteem. In general, Leary says, self-compassion was at least as beneficial as self-esteem for coping with distressing events.
