An 80-year-old man was killed, but he managed to wound his attacker, precipitating the arrest of a suspect.
Halloween night turned out to be the last night on Earth for 80-year-old Charlie Newman, a WWII and Korean War veteran. Newman was stabbed multiple times and shot once. He bled to death.
At 7:35 p.m., Newman dialed 911, but he didn't speak directly into the phone. By enhancing the audiotape of the call, police were able to make out what happened when Newman was killed. Police heard Newman tell a younger man that he needn't go through with his crime. Then they heard "a lot of noise," reported the Decatur Daily (Decatur, Alabama). Police arrived at Newman's house five minutes after the 911 call came in, but Newman was already dead, and the killer was gone.
