SPOTLIGHT: Outfield
ANGELS RF Vladimir Guerrero is an offensive force with a cannon arm. Steady and productive Garret Andersen remains in left field. Darin Erstad moves back to center, where he played with abandon when he won Gold Glove awards in 2000 and 2002. ATHLETICS The team has a potent starting trio of CF Mark Kotsay, RF Milton Bradley and LF Nick Swisher. Bradley figures to bring explosiveness to the lineup, but the A's trust he won't bring it to their fun, loose clubhouse. BLUE JAYS CF Vernon Wells is the only lock for full-time play. Against fighthanders, former 3B Eric Hinske will start in left field and Frank Catalanotto will man fight. LF Reed Johnson and RF Alex Rios figure to play against lefthanders. DEVIL RAYS The outfield has great depth with starters LF Carl Crawford, CF Rocco Baldelli and RF Aubrey Huff. Five-tool prospect Delmon Young could be playing by the end of the season. INDIANS Grady Sizemore has center locked up, but left and right are uncertain. LF Jason Michaels never has been an everyday player, and RF Casey Blake was a liability at the plate last season. Todd Hollandsworth is the fourth outfielder. MARINERS The outfield is a strength. RF Ichiro Suzuki is an annual Gold Glove winner and batting title candidate. CF Jeremy Reed makes dazzling catches but needs to improve offensively. LF Raul Ibanez is a consistent, underrated presence at the plate. ORIOLES RF Jay Gibbons, the lone returning starter, likely will provide power in the middle of the lineup. CF Corey Patterson is expected to unseat Luis Matos, which would bring improvements in power and defense. In left, Matos, Kevin Millar and Jeff Conine will divide time. RANGERS Five candidates are competing for three spots. David Dellucci is expected to play against lefthanders and could be a DH. Brad Wilkerson should be a regular, either in center or one of the corners. Kevin Mench is expected to be a regular but needs to be a big run producer. Gary Matthews can play all three spots. The unknown is Laynce Nix. He needs a strong spring to get in the mix. RED SOX LF Moony Ramirez is one of the most consistent sluggers in the game. CF Coco Crisp has more power than people think. He also has above-average range, though his arm is subpar. RF Trot Nixon crushes hard-throwing righthanders and is an underrated defender but has health issues. ROYALS RF Reggle Sanders brings power to the lineup. CF David DeJesus will bat leadoff but seldom steals bases. He is patient, has a good eye and makes excellent contact. LF Emil Brown broke out last season with 17 homers and 86 RBIs, but he strikes out too much. TIGERS RF Magglio Ordonez ...
