The Angels did nothing this offseason--or close to nothing. Their inactivity wouldn't play in New York, Boston or any other impatient East Coast market. Their restraint might cost them the American League West title. But it's difficult to dispute the sheer, old-fashioned logic of what general manager Bill Stoneman is trying to accomplish.
Stoneman's plan, though ill-suited for the knee-jerk age of talk radio, Internet message boards and fantasy baseball mania, reflects a time-honored baseball philosophy: Show patience. Promote from within and contend not just for one season but for a succession of seasons.
