Elementary school students in St. George have thrown themselves headfirst into the Utah political process by lobbying for the legislature to adopt a new state symbol: the Western Rattler as the state reptile.
Fourth-grade students in Laura Graf's social studies class and other classes at Diamond Valley Elementary School began petitioning for the creation of a state reptile at the beginning of the school year.
Graf, originally a music teacher, is a first-year teacher at the elementary school and was interested in finding a way to really impact the students.
